What was your inspiration for your book, Tabitha Fink and the Patchwork Pirates?
Tabitha Fink was our family cat who came to us as a rescue. She was a great cat who happened to only have one eye, but that fact never stopped her from having a perfectly normal cat life. Over the years we began to realize that she would make a great character for a kids book. So the original book Tabitha Fink The Cat With One Eye was born. The message of that first book was a simple one; that everyone is special in his or her own way. Tabitha knows that she is special, and we wanted kids to be able to use Tabitha to help remember how special they are too. After the first book, we began to take Tabitha on a series of adventures, each with a different focus and message. Tabitha Fink On a Mission to Mars deals with the fear of the unknown and promotes the idea of learning and trying new things. Tabitha Fink Ninja at Night is meant to help kids deal with a fear of the dark. The most recent book and the one that inspired this Budsie is Tabitha Fink and the Patchwork Pirates. That book tells a swashbuckling pirate adventure but is also about friendship, teamwork and not judging others simply because they are different than you.
What makes Tabitha Fink special?
Several characteristics set Tabitha Fink apart and make her a good role model for children. First, she believes in herself. She is confident and proud of who she is. Second, she is supportive, friendly and non-judgmental with others. She sees the good in everyone around her. And finally she is inquisitive. She loves adventure and learning new things. We love that this character can be a role model for early readers.
What made you decide to bring Tabitha Fink to life as a Budsie?
As the book series evolved we heard from a lot of Tabitha Fink readers and fans. Along with comments about the stories and questions about the real Tabitha Fink, one of the most common questions was, “when will there be a Tabitha Fink plush?” It’s been something we wanted to create for several years, but the timing was never quite right. We also had trouble finding a creative partner who could help us produce something that lived up to the specialness of Tabitha Fink herself. Then we discovered the folks at Budsies who worked carefully with us to take the drawing of Tabitha and “bring her to life” as a special hand-made plush. The have been a great company to work with. Now we’re excited to make Tabitha Fink available to kids everywhere!
The Budsies Market is all about celebrating creativity and empowering artists to launch their own plush toy lines
Q: Why did you create the Budsies Market?
We believe independent artists can create stuffed animals that are more unique, adorable, and cuddly than the mass produced plush pumped into your local retailer. Our market empowers creatives around the world to launch their own huggable stuffed animal lines, while we take care of all the behind-the-scenes production and fulfillment magic. Having made over 40,000 custom stuffed animals for artists young and old, we’ve seen the most amazing designs and can’t wait to share them with the world.
