The story behind Penelope the Giraffe

What inspired this character?

Penelope the Giraffe comes from a very special family of creatures that represent a Los Angeles-based charity called Holton’s Heroes. Holton’s Heroes is a nonprofit foundation that serves children around the US affected by life-altering post-birth brain injuries by supplying information, resources, and expensive in-home therapy devices often not covered by insurance or government programs.

While an elephant with its trunk raised up (it represents strength, honor, tenacity, and good luck) is the official logo of Holton’s Heroes, it is the giraffe that has the deepest meaning to the real Holton.

When Holton was only 11 weeks old, his caretaker cracked his skull and smothered him on her very first day watching him. After spending two weeks in a coma, Holton slowly woke up to find a blue giraffe comforting him. It was a gift that he still sleeps with today, almost 3 years later. Penelope the Giraffe is named after Holton’s pet Chihuahua who passed away last year at 16 years old. The real Penelope was as sweet and cuddly as her plush counterpart. Most importantly, 10% of every Penelope the Giraffe sold will go directly to helping children with pediatric brain injuries.

What makes Penelope the Giraffe special?

Holton the Elephant is the leader of the pack for the Holton’s Heroes crew that includes Stella the Tiger, Beau the Orangutan, Izzy the Owl and of course, Penelope the Giraffe. While each member of this incredible group of super hero best friends represent the different heroic qualities it takes to successfully make it through a pediatric brain injury, Penelope’s is by far the most endearing. Since she’s a giraffe, her heart is one of the largest on the planet—both physically and emotionally. Penelope goes to great lengths to make sure everyone around her feels special and loved. She’s a kind soul who also happens to be a vegetarian that loves eating the most delicious leafy green veggies she can find.
