The teacher and developer Hackathon, hosted by SMART Technologies, was an attempt to explore fun and new teaching strategies for teachers and their classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Titled, \u201cHack Your Way to 21st Century Skills,\u201d the Hackathon focuses on the integration of 21st century skills into a classroom curriculum. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smarttech.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">SMART<\/a> website.The goal is to give \u201cfive students first-hand experience in the 4 C\u2019s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Creativity<\/li>\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<li>Critical thinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A Special Trial Hackathon<\/h2>\n<p>This trial Hackathon was special, however, in that it featured digital monsters\u00a0(brought to life by Budsies) that needed their own \u201ctechnological superpowers,\u201d a task assigned to hackathon participants. The focal point of the event, the monsters, became far more popular than the company expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked each group to decide the Monster\u2019s name and it\u2019s technological superpower that would correspond with their Hackathon projects,\u201d Edward Tse, External Research Project Manager of SMART Technologies wrote.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-3.jpg\" alt=\"digital monsters\" width=\"627\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-3.jpg 627w, https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-3-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/>The marketing theme of the Hackathon became \u201cTeachers are Superheroes and Technology is their Superpower.\u201d The teachers involved took quickly to the project, and their love for the monsters carried beyond the time limit of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response of these dolls exceeded our wildest expectations. Teachers started their own twitter hashtag #wantallmonsters and came up with creative ways to request more monster dolls,\u201d Tse wrote. \u201cWhen brought to their class, the students even recorded videos asking for more monsters! Since the Hackathon, I\u2018ve been getting 5-6 requests a day for more monsters, it\u2019s amazing to see the enthusiasm!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tse expects to see even more Monster appreciation and activity when classes start in the fall: \u201cSo far we have seen the Monsters shown prominently at the front of the class and used as class mascots. Teachers have also been taking a number of photos of their dolls around the school and park areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><\/p>\n<h3>And the Hackathons Continue&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>SMART Technologies plans on running hackathons all year in classrooms all over the globe. The monsters will probably be used as prize incentives for good performance based on their popularity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-2.png\" alt=\"teachers and monsters \" width=\"648\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-2.png 648w, https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-2-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-2-80x60.png 80w, https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-2-265x198.png 265w, https:\/\/www.budsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unnamed-2-563x420.png 563w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/>The first Hackathon, and the monsters, were a success, and Tse hopes to see that success continued in future Hackathon events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year one of the goals of the Hackathon was to make it a memorable experience for the teachers and developers that participated,\u201d Tse said.<\/p>\n<p>One developer recounted after the event, \u201cThe opportunity to work directly with customers with such great ideas was something I won\u2019t forget!\u201d Another teacher shared, \u201cI mean \u2026 that presentation \u2026 how can I ever forget!
